Instrumentation and benefit quantification of mass timber buildings

The use of cross-laminated timber and glulam has become more common in commercial buildings, especially for ceiling applications. What is less well known is how their additional thermal mass can improve a building’s thermal performance, how it compares to a concrete slab, and how it can interact with the building’s HVAC system. Here, we have instrumented multiple buildings with CLT and glulam to answer these questions.
