Controls to maximize heat pump water heater potential

When replacing gas or electric water heater with a heat pump water heater (HPWH), a common practice is to increase the size (upsize) the HPWH. For example, if a house has a 40-gal water heater, install a 50-gal HPWH. In collaboration with AO Smith and NRL, we are developing next-generation controls and demonstrating that a 40-gal HPWH performs like a 50-gal HPWH.
